20 Biomedical analysis terms
Hi, my name is Laurie. I live in St-Jérôme and I have been studying Sciences for 1 and a half sessions at St-Jérôme College. My field of study is Biomedical Analysis. The glossary I have made could be use by the students that studying in Biomedical Analysis for their second session but also by the new students that studying in this field of study. All the words in my glossary are basic words of my field. The words can be something we have in our body or an equipment we used to do the analysis.
- analysis
- This process as a method of studying the nature of something or of determining its essential features and their relations:
- analytical balance
- A precision balance having a sensitivity of 0.1 milligram.
- antibody
- Any of numerous Y-shaped protein molecules produced by B cells as a primary immune defense, each molecule and its clones having a unique binding site that can combine with the complementary site of a foreign antigen, as on a virus or bacterium, thereby disabling the antigen and signaling other immune defenses. Abbreviation: Ab
- antigen
- Any substance that can stimulate the production of antibodies and combine specifically with them.
- autopsy
- Inspection and dissection of a body after death, as for determination of the cause of death; postmortem examination.
- bacteria
- Ubiquitous one-celled organisms, spherical, spiral, or rod-shaped and appearing singly or in chains, comprising the Schizomycota, a phylum of the kingdom Monera, various species of which are involved in fermentation, putrefaction, infectious diseases, or nitrogen fixation.
- biochemistry
- The science dealing with the chemistry of living matter.
- cancer
- A malignant and invasive growth or tumor, especially one originating in epithelium, tending to recur after excision and to metastasize to other sites.
- centrifuge
- An apparatus that rotates at high speed and by centrifugal force separates substances of different densities.
- erythrocyte
- Red blood cell
- hematology
- The study of the nature, function, and diseases of the blood and of blood-forming organs.
- histopathology
- The science dealing with the histological structure of abnormal or diseased tissue; pathological histology.
- laboratory
- It's a building, part of a building, or other place equipped to conduct scientific experiments, tests, investigations
- leukocyte
- White blood cell.
- microbiology
- The branch of biology dealing with the structure, function, uses, and modes of existence of microscopic organisms.
- microscope
- An optical instrument having a magnifying lens or a combination of lenses for inspecting objects too small to be seen or too small to be seen distinctly and in detail by the unaided eye.
- pipette
- A slender graduated tube used in a laboratory for measuring and transferring quantities of liquids from one container to another.
- sampling of blood
- An amount of a person's blood taken from their body for use in medical tests.

- A loose, lightweight over garment worn to protect the clothing while working.
- virus
- An ultramicroscopic, metabolically inert, infectious agent that replicates only within the cells of living hosts, mainly bacteria, plants, and animals: composed of an RNA or DNA core, a protein coat, and, in more complex types, a surrounding envelope.
